Dr. Jeremy Burnham’s Research Focus
Dr. Burnham leads a multidisciplinary research team at the Ochsner-Andrews Sports Medicine Institute in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, working alongside physicians, surgeons, athletic trainers, physical therapists, and strength and conditioning coaches, and collaborating with top research institutions around the world. In partnership with Luke Bunch, DPT, coordinator of the ACL Center of Excellence, the program is based at the Elite Training Complex, where the team utilizes state-of-the-art markerless motion capture, flush-mounted force plates, and 1080 Sprint technology, with access to a world-class indoor and outdoor football and sports training facility on site.
With 127 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and scientific presentations, Dr. Burnham’s research focuses on advancing ACL reconstruction, optimizing return-to-sport outcomes, and pioneering injury prevention research to keep young athletes in Louisiana safe. Dr. Burnham’s work in ACL injury prevention was recognized with the Game Changer Award from the Arthritis Foundation, and he was awarded the Playmaker Award from the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) to study biologic augmentation of ACL surgery. Dr. Burnham is the most published ACL researcher in Louisiana, and his research has appeared in Arthroscopy, The American Journal of Sports Medicine, Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy, and The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, and in textbooks including Master Techniques in Orthopaedic Surgery and Return to Play in Football. Below is a selection of published work, with links to full-text articles where available.

Frequently Asked Questions
What types of research does Dr. Burnham focus on?
Dr. Burnham’s research focuses on sports medicine and orthopaedic surgery, with particular emphasis on anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, knee biomechanics, injury prevention, and biologic augmentation techniques. His work spans clinical outcomes research, biomechanical studies, and translational science aimed at improving surgical techniques and patient recovery.
How can I access Dr. Burnham’s published articles?
Many of Dr. Burnham’s publications are available as downloadable PDFs directly from this page — look for highlighted titles with links. Additional articles can be accessed through PubMed or by contacting Dr. Burnham’s office directly.
Is Dr. Burnham involved in clinical trials or ongoing research?
Yes. Dr. Burnham is actively involved in clinical and biomechanical research through his practice and affiliations. Current areas of investigation include markerless 3D motion capture for injury prevention screening, biologic augmentation of ACL reconstruction, and outcomes following anatomic ACL reconstruction techniques. For inquiries about research collaboration, please contact his office.
What is the difference between peer-reviewed publications and presentations?
Peer-reviewed publications are articles that have been evaluated by independent experts in the field before being published in a scientific journal. Presentations (podium and poster) are research findings shared at professional conferences and meetings. Both represent important contributions to the medical literature, though peer-reviewed publications undergo a more rigorous review process.
Can I use Dr. Burnham’s research for my own academic work?
Dr. Burnham’s published works can be cited in academic papers following standard citation guidelines. For permission to reproduce figures, tables, or substantial portions of text, please contact the respective journal publisher. If you have questions about a specific study’s methodology or findings, Dr. Burnham’s office can help facilitate communication.
Who are Dr. Burnham’s primary research collaborators?
Dr. Burnham has collaborated extensively with leading figures in orthopaedic sports medicine. His most prolific research partnership has been with Freddie H. Fu, MD, the late Distinguished Service Professor and Chairman of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh — a pioneer in anatomic ACL reconstruction. Dr. Burnham also has longstanding collaborations with Volker Musahl, MD (UPMC, knee biomechanics and ligament reconstruction), Mary Lloyd Ireland, MD (University of Kentucky, sports medicine and injury prevention), and Brian Noehren, PhD, PT (biomechanics and movement science). Together with colleagues including Elmar Herbst, Thiago Pfeiffer, and Christian Lattermann, this network of collaborators has produced research spanning ACL reconstruction techniques, knee biomechanics, return-to-play criteria, and injury prevention.
What institutions has Dr. Burnham been affiliated with for research?
Dr. Burnham’s research career spans multiple academic medical centers. He conducted significant research at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) during his sports medicine fellowship under Dr. Freddie Fu, contributing to landmark studies on anatomic ACL reconstruction. He also conducted research at the University of Kentucky during his orthopaedic surgery residency, working with Dr. Mary Lloyd Ireland and Dr. Christian Lattermann on knee surgery outcomes. He currently leads clinical and biomechanical research initiatives through his practice in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, with collaborators including Anthony Drazick, DPT and the Elite Training Academy motion analysis team.
What is Dr. Burnham’s connection to Dr. Freddie Fu?
Dr. Burnham completed his sports medicine fellowship at UPMC under the mentorship of Dr. Freddie H. Fu, widely regarded as one of the most influential orthopaedic surgeons in history. Dr. Fu pioneered the concept of individualized, anatomic ACL reconstruction — an approach that Dr. Burnham continues to apply and advance in his practice. Together they co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications on ACL biomechanics, surgical techniques, and clinical outcomes. Dr. Fu’s legacy continues to shape Dr. Burnham’s approach to evidence-based, patient-specific knee surgery.
