Dr. Burnham’s research focuses on sports medicine and orthopaedic surgery, with particular emphasis on anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, knee biomechanics, injury prevention, and biologic augmentation techniques. Dr. Burnham has collaborated extensively with leading figures in orthopaedic sports medicine. His most prolific research partnership has been with Freddie H. Fu, MD, the late Distinguished Service Professor and Chairman of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh \u2014 a pioneer in anatomic ACL reconstruction. Dr. Burnham also has longstanding collaborations with Volker Musahl, MD (UPMC, knee biomechanics and ligament reconstruction), Mary Lloyd Ireland, MD (University of Kentucky, sports medicine and injury prevention), and Brian Noehren, PhD, PT (biomechanics and movement science). Together with colleagues including Elmar Herbst, Thiago Pfeiffer, and Christian Lattermann, this network of collaborators has produced research spanning ACL reconstruction techniques, knee biomechanics, return-to-play criteria, and injury prevention.

Dr. Burnham’s research career spans multiple academic medical centers. He conducted significant research at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) during his sports medicine fellowship under Dr. Freddie Fu, contributing to landmark studies on anatomic ACL reconstruction. He also conducted research at the University of Kentucky during his orthopaedic surgery residency, working with Dr. Mary Lloyd Ireland and Dr. Christian Lattermann on knee surgery outcomes. He currently leads clinical and biomechanical research initiatives through his practice in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, with collaborators including Anthony Drazick, DPT and the Elite Training Academy motion analysis team.

Dr. Burnham completed his sports medicine fellowship at UPMC under the mentorship of Dr. Freddie H. Fu, widely regarded as one of the most influential orthopaedic surgeons in history. Dr. Fu pioneered the concept of individualized, anatomic ACL reconstruction \u2014 an approach that Dr. Burnham continues to apply and advance in his practice. Together they co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications on ACL biomechanics, surgical techniques, and clinical outcomes.
